When to book
Carnival takes over the streets of West London on the August bank holiday weekend — the last Sunday and Monday of August, every year. This is one of London’s busiest weekends; book your hotel two to three months out, and expect premium rates anywhere near the route.
Sunday is traditionally "Children’s Day" — calmer, family-friendly. Monday is the grand parade and the full, glorious chaos. Plan which day matches your group’s energy.
Where to stay — Notting Hill vs Brixton
Notting Hill puts you in the middle of it — magical, but you will be inside the crowd from the moment you leave the lobby, and hotels are pricey and booked early. Stay here if you want to roll out of bed into Carnival.
Brixton, south of the river, is the beating heart of London’s Caribbean community year-round. Stay here for the pre-Carnival energy, the food, and a calmer home base with a straight tube line up to the action. It is the smart-money choice.
What to wear
This is a costume moment if you want it — feathers, sequins, and color, especially if you join a masquerade band. If you are spectating rather than playing mas, go bright and comfortable: this is a day of standing, walking, and dancing on hard London pavement.
Layer for British weather (August can be 18°C and drizzly or 28°C and glorious), and wear shoes you would run a 5K in.
Sound systems, food & drink
The sound systems are the soul of Carnival — around forty static rigs positioned along the route, each with its own genre and crowd, from reggae and dub to soca, dancehall, and house. Pick a couple to anchor your day; the vibe on each corner is completely different.
Follow the smoke to the food: jerk chicken, curry goat, rice and peas, festival dumplings, and rum punch from street stalls all weekend. Bring cash and a reusable water bottle.
Safety in the crowd & beauty notes
With two million people, treat it like any massive event: agree a meeting point and time with your group (phone signal drops under the crowd), keep valuables in a zipped crossbody, and know where the quieter exit streets are if you need to step out.
