Galveston, Texas — where it began
Galveston is the birthplace of Juneteenth: it was here, on June 19th, 1865, that General Order No. 3 announced freedom to enslaved Texans. The city’s commemorations — including events at the Old Central Cultural Center and the Reedy Chapel — are the most historically resonant in the country. Stay on the Strand or the seawall; combine the history with a beach weekend.
Washington, DC
As a federal holiday’s spiritual home, DC pairs Juneteenth programming with the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Expect concerts, cookouts on the Mall, and U Street celebrations. Stay in Shaw or downtown for walkability.
Atlanta, New Orleans & Oakland
Atlanta throws one of the largest Juneteenth festivals in the South, centered on music, Black-owned marketplaces, and family programming; base yourself downtown or in the West End.
New Orleans folds Juneteenth into its endless calendar of Second Lines and Congo Square drumming — a soulful, music-forward take on the holiday.
Oakland anchors the West Coast celebration, with a decades-old Juneteenth tradition rooted in the Bay’s deep Black organizing history. Stay near downtown Oakland or Lake Merritt.
