The most welcoming cities
Lisbon consistently tops our European Welcome Ratings. A large Afro-Portuguese and Cape Verdean community means Black faces are woven into daily life, not treated as novelty. The food, music, and neighborhoods like Mouraria reflect centuries of African presence.
London and Paris are diaspora capitals in their own right — Brixton and Notting Hill in London, Château Rouge and the Baldwin legacy in Paris. Both are large, cosmopolitan, and home to deep Black communities, though both also require normal big-city awareness.
Where to plan more carefully
Smaller and more homogenous destinations — parts of Eastern Europe, rural Italy, some Alpine regions — can range from simply unaccustomed to Black visitors to occasionally hostile. This doesn’t mean “don’t go.” It means go informed, base yourself in larger cities, and connect with local Black communities who can point you to the good.
Practical tips
Book stays in diverse, central neighborhoods. Seek out Black-owned restaurants and barbershops — they’re community hubs and instant sources of local knowledge. Learn a few phrases in the local language; warmth opens doors everywhere. And use the BLKNomad Welcome Rating to weigh a destination before you commit.
Europe rewards the Black traveler who does a little homework. The freedom Baldwin found is still there — you just want to know which door to walk through.
