The Ultimate HBCU Homecoming Travel Guide

HBCU homecoming is the greatest reunion on earth: tailgates, step shows, band battles, and generations of alumni returning home all at once. If you’ve never been, this is how to travel it right.

The homecomings to know

Howard University (Washington, DC) throws arguably the most famous homecoming in the country. Atlanta’s AUC schools — Spelman, Morehouse, and Clark Atlanta — turn the city into one enormous celebration. Southern powerhouses like Florida A&M, North Carolina A&T, Jackson State, and Hampton each bring their own legendary energy and band culture.

Book early — really early

Homecoming weekends sell out hotels months in advance, and prices spike. Book flights and stays as soon as dates are announced, typically for weekends across late September through October. For Atlanta and DC, our Fly & Stay packages can pair a private empty-leg flight with a curated stay if you’re traveling with a group.

What to expect

Expect crowds, cookouts, and constant reunions. Tailgates are the main event — bring comfortable shoes and layered outfits (you’ll go from a daytime tailgate to an evening party). Coordinate with your chapter or friend group early, because the best group houses go fast.

Above all, homecoming is about belonging. Even if you didn’t attend the school, an HBCU homecoming is a masterclass in Black joy — and everyone’s cousin is welcome.
